I second
The Cay by Theodore Taylor excellent novel on individuality overcoming
race differences
and suggest
The Waton's Go to Birmingham Very direct statement on a family leaving
the south to find their identity in the north, but their roots are calling
them home
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry would be for stronger readers.
Good pic books to introduce the theme
Going North by Janice N. Harrington, Jerome Lagarrigue Black family leaving
the south to find a better life up north
The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson, E. B. Lewis Great story of two
children of different races ignoring the opinions of family and friends to
"sit on the fence" together.
