HI,
In Cheryl Sigmon's book, Writing Lessons for the Content Areas: Standards-Based Lessons That Help Students Plan, Organize, and Draft Their Nonfiction Writing in Social Studies and Science, she has a graphic organizer called the Alpha - Key Words Chart. I have my kids write down unfamiliar or interesting words as they encounter them in the text. I've also filled out the chart and given it to the kids to find specific words in text and see if they can tell the meaning by context clues, then read and write the definition from the dictionary.
I've heard that Marzano suggests working with the words in (five?) different ways. I've not read the book, we are waiting for it to arrive at our school. I think our administrator said that students should try to define the word within the context of the text, look for the definition in the dictionary, draw a picture of their definition, and write a sentence using the word. I think there was another way. I wish I had the book so I could help you more.
I'd like to know more about vocabulary development, as well. It is one of the weak areas identified from our students' IOWA test results.
