[MOSAIC] Joy textmapping

Gina,
I make photo copies of the text, making sure that the page numbers are visible. (I've even handwritten the numbers when I am making the copies if I notice that they are hard to read) I demonstrate how to connect the pages, then I let them do it. All you do is paste the right edge of the first page to the left edge of the second page, and so on. Usually they get it after I've attached the first three pages. I always remind them to pay attention to the page numbers! I've even split the pages among the group, giving the first three pages to Mandy, the second three pages to Paige, the next three pages to Zack, etc. Then they paste their sections together. This works exceptionally well if you have kids who have a hard time sharing duties.

It is important that the kids learn how to roll them up. You always start at the last page or end of the book. Funny, the kids ALWAYS want to start with the first page!

Some advice when making scrolls. Try it out to see if using glue sticks or cellophane tape is better. Some texts work better with one than the other, some classes of kids work better with one than the other. This last time tape worked better because the text went almost to the edge of the paper and there wasn't any room for overlap. Make sure you have lots of extra glue sticks and tape. I always try to have twice as much as I think would be too much!

Whichever way you choose to attach the pages, make sure that you get all the edges and corners put together real well. Otherwise you can have a problem with the thing splitting apart.

I also give each group an elastic band, and make one of the kids the keeper of the band (They put it on their wrist so they don't lose it.) Also, plan to have LOTS of open space so groups don't bump into each other. (My biggest challenge!)

You can give each group the same pages, or do a jigsaw activity, giving each group a different section to work on, then having them regroup and teach each other what they learned.

  It's definitely worth it!

when you say you're using textmapping, are you giving kids those scrolls
with copies of the book pages pasted down? I have looked at that many
times, and as interesting as it looked, I couldn't imagine creating those
scrolls for three classes of middle schoolers. Is it well worth the time
to make them? Gina
