In a guided reading lesson the text should be at their instructional
level, which is between 90-95% accuracy on a running record. Their
independent level is from 95-100% accuracy. They should not need
instruction at this level unless you are working on some difficult
comprehension strategy where you would need to take away the decoding
so they can focus on the comprehension. As far as finding text for
you 44 K word child and the others that need a lower level than the
basal has to offer, you'll need to think out of the box a bit. I have
created text for students that can be catered to their interest
level. You can try to get multiple copies of text from the library.
Fountas & Pinnell's book about guided reading tells you about each
level's characteristics and has leveled some of the text in the back.
There is also a sight that has leveled text that you can print
callled www.readinga-z.com . There are benchmark books that have
running records to print that go with each level of text. It costs
some $ but it is a fabulous resource for many things.
I hope this helps! I have been a guided reading babe from way back so
I would be happy to help if you have anymore ?'s. Good Luck
