Hello... I I am back after a long break... Don't you just love that book "Ink
Drinker" I read this book to my 4/5 class this year and they absolutely
disolved it. The sequels City of Ink Drinkers, Straw for Two and there is
another one which I forget the name of ??? are great follow ups but... wow...
especially I feel for boys who do not have that reading bug yet.... it
certainly makes an impression... I think there are plenty of books that you
could read however to your grade 2's --- I have taught there for a few years...
I really enjoy "one tiny ant", which you could also read "the ant bully" with
and make a connection to --- then you could tie this in to the text to self and
text to world connection... you could hit them all at once... I have also done
the series of Eve Bunting books... The wall, the smoky night, A day's work, Fly
Away Home. Kevin Henkes ties into friendship and feelings (health unit - cross
curricular)Chrysanthemum, Julius, the Baby of the World, Owen, and Sheila Ray
the Brave which are great to use as T-T connections but, as we all know Text to
text soon leads us to all sorts of wonderful and wild connections that NONE of
us thought of before... how GRAND is that!!! There are other things of course
that you can do other than the straight AUTHOR study. One of the things that I
do daily ... and I have done this in the early drades as well - is to give them
a poem first thing in the morning - rather than morning math or morning fact or
what have you it is morning poety... I have a different student read the poem
(not in unison ) Unison reading is counteractive to fluency. About 5 different
students a day... But then I have them paste this poem in their poetry journals
and use the elements of reflection that they have posted on the front cover of
their notebooks. These I will attach for you...:) They LOVE doing these and it
calms the whole class as they enter before any subject. Ihope this has
helped...I do have a T-t list of picture book literature somewhere in my
files... I will pull this out for you this week... My son is having his tonsils
and adnoids out tomorrow and I am off for the day.. however... The reading lady
(we know her well ) :) smile I am attaching her T-T Tee Tables for you (
totally invaluable for the children to understand in regards to organizing
their thoughts - in addition to her game plan... :) Good Luck... Sorry I am so
wordy... I have missed y'all
