In middle schoool, reading assessment is almost entirely about
comprehension, and that's what our NCLB state testing program is about. Read
a passage, answer these questions, including the constructed response or
open-ended question.

Typically, we assess with a simulated practice state test or testy reading
passages with questions (as little as possible in my class), a lot of
writing about reading, and in my class a lot of talking about reading with
book groups or the more formal Socratic Circles structure. If the meaning
isn't there, then I look for problems like reading too fast, book at too
high a level, low interest, etc.
