I've had some success with older students (5th-6th) and their parents in
book clubs held in the evening.  We met once before reading the book and
once after reading the book.  A group of students had created discussion
stop points for parents and students to use at home during the reading.  At
the first session, I modeled the use of sticky notes (as students had done
in class literature circles) to show parents how to "leave tracks".  We had
a few grant dollars to support providing the books (a copy for each student
and each parent) and another parent provided refreshments.  For me, the
primary purpose of these groups was to get parents involved with their
child's reading and to establish a dialogue of intellectual exchanges.  For
me, the lunch bunch book clubs have a different purpose -- to get kids
interested in books.

For the past few years I have had a book club for students, grades 4-6. 
I have invited family members to join us, but haven't been successful. 
This year I will try again. Does anyone have ideas for me? The book club 
meets over lunch recess. The kids eat in my room.We meet for half an
