It depends on the day, skill, and kids I am working with. Most kids read  
independently during that time.... a certain flexible group that I met with  
earlier in the week might try out a skill in partenership but even that is  
orchestrated... back to back reading first where kids try stuff out alone but  still 
sitting together. Then they usually have a think time. Turn knee to knee  and 
eye to eye and have discussion or turn knee to knee and shoulder to shoulder  
for shared partner read ( reading together , or one finger pointing and one  
reading aloud ... you get the picture..... I read in Ardith Davis Cole about 
how  long she spent on positioning kids and I find that the structure of knee 
to knee  etc... makes a world of difference on how kids partner... the position 
itself  cues a type of behavior and makes the whole workshop thing so much 
more  manageable.
