We also have an interactive "tip bulletin board" to help grow readers.

Could you explain your interactive "tip bulletin board?"

  Thanks

I use the workshop model and kids are sustaining themselves in first grade
for 25 minutes or more right now. We spent a lot of time in September
learning the format of guided reading.
We did a lot of self- and group-monitoring.... something I call oops and
wows ... where we talk about all behaviors noticed during the period and rate
them as behavior that augments workshop and behavior that needs to be changed.
and specifically how to change it....(it takes about 5 minutes at the end of
the period to review and rate) This check really makes huge differences. I
also videotaped them once and they really could see and evaluate workshop for
themselves. We also use a timer and each day increase stamina by trying to
extend our time. We post our efforts in the hallway and make them public
reading. There are other built-in incentives.... we have buddies visit us twice a
month from fifth and we show off our logs, reader responses and improved read
aloud voices. We also have an interactive "tip bulletin board" to help grow
readers. I really have to say if you follow "Connect, Teach, Practice,
Independent practice, share" framework of minilessons and thread the objective
through to the self-selected part of workshop, kids are busy the whole time. They
are empowered and self-regulatory.
My kids are choosing their Just Right books and after the initial DRA
assessment they really can do this even better......logging titles read, reading in
different formats ( alone, with partner, with power group) recording a
response at least twice a week and trying to respond to the minilesson in some way
during share... there really is no time for center work.
My group this year is particularly immature but they have taken to workshop
format perfectly. It also helps that all of us in the building do workshop
across the disciplines.... Kindergarten kids come in with some knowledge of what
is expected...our work is to extend their stamina and provide more transfer
of decoding and comprehension skill.
I must say it is one of the more relaxing parts of the day and much easier
than trying to orchestrate, maintain, and manage centers .
