I like this because it's really simple. I would add one thing, though. 
After asking the child what he/she is working on and where they are at, 
and before giving them a specific compliment, I would ask them....

What do you like best about this work?
What do you think you need help with or would like to change?

... because I think it's important to give children as many 
opportunities as possible to assess their own work.
