I used Owl Moon to introduce this strategy last year with my first
grade students. It worked perfectly!

If you introduce/expand this in the winter there is a book "A City
Christmas Tree" (I hope that I got the title right). A family of 4 or 5
children each describe how they know it is Christmas in New York. One
knows by what is seen, other by smell, etc. A volunteer reader brought
this in for my Kinders and it then made its rounds to the other grades
because they loved it when they read it.

This is just a little nothing of a thrill. Today was our first Tuesday

Tales with a parent reading. You remember that I did a short
demonstration at Parents' Night about making connections (at your
suggestion). This mother did a terrific imitation of what I showed the

parents. She read, looked up at the children, said what the reading
made her think about, and the children responded thoughtfully with
their own connections. It was a great start for Tuesday Tales!

I took several first year teacher to observe today in a dynamite first
grade classroom. Here are the three centers I observed
being used very productively during literacy block:

Listening post
Independent reading (and, yes, the groups were really reading)
Big books (only those familiar to children as introduced through shared
reading and with a task, today they were list words
with th or sh)

Kids spent 15 minutes or so at each center. Transitions were well
defined in terms of expectations and the teacher herself
was another station, she met with guided reading groups.

Now that this discussion group is up and running again I'd like to
announce
its existence to new members of the elementary-lesson-share and grade
level
yahoogroups that I'm involved with. There are probably others who
would like to
share the news, too. Some of us are on list servs that have thousands
of
members, so there's a potential for a flood of new subscription
requests. I'm
thinking that it might be wiser to wait until the beginning glitches are

worked out, though. I suggest we all wait until we get a go ahead
message from
Keith.
