Have you read When Kids Can't Read, What Teachers Can Do, by Kyleen Beers? It's another wonderful resource for older kids who are struggling with the act of reading. It says it's for grade 6-12, but I'm using it in a K-5 building.

I have to agree with this recommendation. I heard Franki speak at a
conference this summer, and I bought her book. Her ideas really fit my style of
teaching because I love using novels. I really think balance is the key. Good luck
