[MOSAIC] Word Study...a bit long...Rock the SAT

This year one of our teachers found a text and CD called Rock the SAT.  It
has 260 vocabulary words all imbedded in 12 songs. So, we bought it for all
ELA teachers. Students love it (although it took them some time to get used
to it.) Students can derive the meaning of most words from contextual clues
in the song(s). 

 

I can tell you that I love the work myself.  We sing the song(s) almost
every day, reviewing the meaning of the words.  Then I have students look
for the vocabulary in their independent reading texts, movies, tv shows etc.
It is amazing how attentive students are to this new vocabulary.  It takes
about two weeks for the students to memorize the song - which they are not
required to do but do anyway. (I type and provide them a copy of the song.)

I am seeing the vocabulary in their writing and their daily speech. 

 

One more thing...all the ELA teachers are using Rock the SAT.  Off-team
students come by while we are singing and start singing the songs in the
hall, some come in and dance with us, whole teams have erupted into song in
the cafeteria...it has been absolute joy to study vocabulary as a whole
school using this CD.  

 

If you google Rock the SAT you can listen to the first song (Silence,
Reticence)...which my students figured out for themselves, so they all
downloaded it to their IPods.
