Like Julianne, I have a son who has an August birthday.  And like her twins, 
my son was academically ready for kindergarten but I felt he lacked the 
social skills necessary to be successful.  He is going to be entering his 
senior year in high school in September and in some ways, I still feel he's 
immature.  His first two girlfiriends were a school year behind him as well 
as most of his friends.

I think you have to know your own child and what might/might night work. 
I've had students who were the youngest and you could not tell and for 
others, the difference was obvious.
