[MOSAIC] Fluency assessment question

You could ask them. "What were you thinking about when you read...?"  Are
these words read in isolation?  Is there any sign of monitoring or
cross-checking going on?  A first grader who guesses a word based on initial
sounds is, IMO, a very different ballgame  than the sixth grader doing the
same.  

I do wonder, though, what difference it makes at this point--especially for
the young readers.  Regardless of WHY they do what they do, they need to be
taught to look across the word, to cross-check and monitor--to hear and
question significant miscues. Once you have done this, and the children do
or do not act upon the instruction, it would seem the time to begin to
explore other issues.
