[MOSAIC] retelling & DRA2

Here's what it says in the book, The Power of Retelling:
--"The problem was that not only did students not know how to retell but
also our teachers did not know how to teach them this holistic way of
comprehending. The 'a-ha' that retelling was not only a strong assessment
of comprehension but also a very powerful instructional strategy for
teaching comprehension made us realize that teachers needed to view
retelling not as a product but as process." (p. 1)
--"Students must not only be able to read the story, they must also know how
a story works, understand how to analyze the story and think about it
critically, have the oral language necessary to talk about it, and then be
able to reconceptualize that oral language . . . " (p. 2)
--"These teachers were mandated to use retelling as part of a statewide
assessment of comprehension. What they found, in addition to higher
assessment levels was an opportunity for extending learning, thinking, and
comprehension." (p. 5)
Hope this is helpful. Reading this book made me rethink my view of
retelling.
