[MOSAIC] Reading Specialists Schedules

We have 600ish students in 4th and 5th grade, and there are 3 reading specialists. Our positions are paid with Title I $, a grant, and district funds. We each work with groups of 4-6 students for 30 minutes, 4 days a week. We each have a caseload of around 25 students.

The one thing we don't like is that we feel like our small group instruction is not specifically tailored to the needs of the group, so we're looking at ways to revamp that for next year.

The rest of our time is spent pushing into classrooms to aid in differentiation and to expand the use of reading strategies in content area subject matter. We also try to have planning periods of 30-60 minutes/week with each classroom teacher where we push in. Push-in classrooms are teachers with reading students and other teachers who invite us to lead or team teach. We try to push in to classrooms 1-4 days per week.

In addition to all of this, we model strategy lessons in all the classrooms once a month. We provide the teachers with a packet of lesson ideas and graphic organizers to help them incorporate the strategies into their lessons.

Subject: [MOSAIC] Reading Specialists Schedules

I am interested in hearing from reading specialists who work with small
groups of children. How many days a week do you see the same group of
students and for how long? I don't feel I am able to get enough reading in
the way it is scheduled at my school. I work with 3rd-5th grade and some
groups I only see for 45 minutes twice a week. We have district mandated
curriculum that the students are required to receive in their homeroom
classes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Barbara
