Just to share some ideas that have been helpful for different groups that I
have encountered.
To engage readers
Lot and lots and lots more read alouds andtons of modeling
For decoding - I have done assessment and use work study activities for each
level.
Making words - 4 Blocks
Word Sorts - Words Their Way and Word Journeys
Manipulatives - Reading Rods - Roll a word dice - Boggle
Computer Program - Book Worm / Scrabble
Specific interventions from Saxon Interventions
Word Ladders - it seems that most of my students know a core of basic
words but have very limited skills in manipulating letters to form new words
For comprehension and vocabulary
Intentional reading - strongly setting purpose for reading before book is
opened
Lots of drawing activities - great for assessment too
Text reader such as Read and Write Gold so students can independently
listen to text or specific parts of texts that they need to repeat in order to
understand
Use rubrics so students have a visual model of teacher expectations
Use actual photographs and or picture symbols to associate words with
meaning
For fluency
Read and Write Gold
Fluency CD's by Raisinski
Choral reading - particularly poetry and familiar song - even the pledge
Reader Theater
Writing
Lots of response to reading
Lots of shared writing included drawing
Lots of Writing stretchers - Sitton Spelling Ideas
Writers Workshop
Lots of peer editing
If anyone is interested in any names of resources - email me off list and I
will try and share some of my favorites.
