RE: My question is this: how are teachers in your school meeting
together
to discuss ideas?
At the end of the school year, I sent out an open invitation to all
elementary teachers (we have a small school) to join together at a local
coffee shop to discuss reading strategies in the content areas. We did
this throughout June and July. We used the book "Teaching Science and
Social Studies in the Content Areas" as a jumping off point. We
discussed one chapter and then the next week we all brought samples of
work that we had used or additional books, black line masters, etc that
we had used and talked about how it worked for us. The benefit was that
we were talking "across the grade levels", none of us had to prepare a
lot, but we all went away with an idea or 2 to use the coming school
year in our classes. We stayed at the same coffee shop so that if you
missed a time, you still knew where we would be the next time. This was
totally voluntary but did create unity between those that attended.
There is a request to do something similar this summer. I'd like to
hear topic ideas--not just book reads/studies.
