I agree.  She does seem very lonely.  Maybe, that's why it made me feel sad.  She was trying to reach someone, anyone, it seemed because she was lonely.

Remember that John Denver song, where 'she's getting ready to fly?'  There is a line about how life in the city can make you 
hungry for things that you can't even see.  This poem made me think about that song, how lonely it sounded.  Maybe the city 
leaves her feeling lifeless.
