Bill,
I agree with you.  I am a better teacher through the strategies.  They are
simply tools.  Some kids never need them, some kids have trouble getting
past them.  I intro them as a mini lesson, and during think alouds, and push
them more with kids I believe need them.  Not all of our kids come to us
reading in 7th grade.  Many of them don't even speak English well.  Though
not the only tool, I believe, the most powerful tool we have as models of
good reading, is the opportunity to read aloud and discuss what we read.

Atwell has the same kids for history as well, and she DOES use the standards
with them.

The strategies, to me, are training wheels.  They stay on as long as they
need them.
