I think another added benefit in direct relation to strategy instruction is
the payoff when kids are writing. A well developed thinking voice helps
structure a story and provides direction to implant needed author craft. Not only
that, the reader is ever present in the writer's mind when strategies are in
place.

This inside outside type of thinking in my mind provides a window into a
child's level of proficiency. Not only can a student identify and use a strategy
to understand text but actually direct and create his own text guided by the
strategy .

...a "coat-rack" approach rather than emphasis on skill and drill.. a
framework on which to hang concepts basic to all text. Instead of graphic
organizers based on strategies ... a synthesis of strategies and the creation of text.
