Well I have never been trained in reader's theater or ever had any drama
classes, but I think I am good at reading stories to children. I use
inflection according to what's happening in the story, but I am NOT a
role-player and I do NOT act stories out while I'm reading them. If that
makes me a bad reader of stories, then I'd say the standards are just a wee
bit too tight.

 

Perhaps up and coming teachers should have to pass a reading aloud test and
if they don't pass it, no teaching credential for them.

 

You don't need drama classes nor do you need to physically act out the
stories.  If you are reading with inflection you are doing a great job I'm
sure.  But I have heard teachers read aloud with no inflection, in a
monotone.  Even the most exciting story becomes boring and it will not
motivate children to read.  Teachers should work on their read aloud skills
if they are teaching elementary language arts as it is a very important
component of a good program.  I wouldn't deny teaching credentials, but I
would help them improve before they hit the classroom.  It is my favorite
part of the day!
