I have used both blogs and discussion groups with students.  I find some students that never participate in class come to life via technology discussions. I like offering a different way for students to jump in.

I like discussion groups because of the threading, but I like blogs for when I want it to stay more direct.  On google blogger I can set it up as a closed membership and multiple authors--and I am still the administrator.  It is pretty easy for me to check through the postings because I can set it up to email me whenever a new post is listed--pretty easy to monitor.  I have used nicenet and tapped-in for discussion groups.
