I always end with an essay on "What have you learned in Reading this year?"
I also point out it could be personal, about their reading skills, or
something we may have read or discussed over the year.
I also give a final essay which is bascially no topic. I tell them one of
my goals for the year was to turn them into critical thinkers so an essay on
anything they can think to write is a great way for me to see how they have
matured as readers and writers.
I also keep their first essays from the first day of school, "What does
READING mean to you?" and ask them to read them and tell me "What does
READING mean to you, now?" It gives them a chance to see for themselves how
they've improved as writers and when given that evidence, they are more
likely to think about how they've improved as readers.
