one way i think it effective is to give them 5 or 6 examples of paragraphs with a main idea and/or summary. some of them right and some wrong. break them up into small groups to discuss and then have them offer their selections. too often students confuse topic with main idea and then they can't do a summary. but teaching through example and non-example can work.
