Maybe this all has to be modeled for them. If they can't do it and they  
obviously don't see it done at home, how would they know? Enlist some colleagues  
and do a fish bowl to model what you want the kids to do. HAve them take notes 
 about what they notice and any questions they might have. Then you coul make 
 some criteria from that and ask them to try it. It might work???
