Hello,
I have taught middle school for a lot of years and I think Bill's students
are sadly a reflection of the direction of our culture. I have two reading
classes this year, one is overall pretty motivated and the other very much like
Bill describes. Both are sixth graders and both are special needs. I agree
with Lori and others about the conversation. I have modeled and modeled and
modeled and finally my less motivated students are producing a glimmer of hope.
I am doing very short read with them and using modified literature circles
that involve responses in many different formats including oral
presentations, technology generated products, artistic products and photography. We do
lots of turn and talk and lots of having students teach others. It is slow
going. We do books with the corresponding movies - a little but at a time in
class. We also use text mapping.
One play/movie that always has generated a lot of interest has been Twelve
Angry Men. Best wishes to each of you.
June
