Hi Bill,
Good for you for bringing in movies into comprehension! I would
suggest taking baby steps - maybe starting with movies that capture
their interests, so perhaps asking them what kind of movies they like
and finding one that is appropriate to share in class.
I would also teach reading strategies such as predicting,
questioning, visualizing, summarizing one at a time and start with you
modeling it through a read aloud. Again, it should be something that
interests them or is connected to issues surrounding their world.
I think these kids could use some help with learning how to
summarize small chunks, rather than waiting until the end of the movie
to summarize it. Perhaps using graphic organizers and modeling how to
summarize throughout the text / movie would be helpful?
Good luck and hang in there!
Christine
