Bill,

Have you tried using what your students are interested in and having
that be a starting point for strategy instruction? Students today are
so into technology that this may be the avenue you want to pursue. I
noticed that you said that learning occurs in waves throughout the
generations. Times are not what the used to be and students are
learning things differently today that you and I did. Though we cant
address is all in the classroom, it would be doing our students an
injustice to not acknowledge some of what they are doing. I know that
teacher monitored blogs are big in classrooms now. Maybe using one of
these will help reach some of your students? Maybe take articles from
magazines, books, or even video games that your students are using and
form mini lessons from them? Multiple Literacies are HUGE and showing
your students how the things they do outside of school can be looked
at with a strategic comprehension lens could be a powerful tool.

Just some thoughts!

Jenn
