Also consider looking in your school bookroom to see which author you have represented well. I found that Melvin Berger had written lots of books that showcased many non-fiction conventions (index, headings, bold text, labeled drawings, etc.), so I changed my author study to him from Gail Gibbons, just because of the availability of texts...

Although it is not the highest quality of writing, the Magic Treehouse
NON-FICTION paired books can be great in my opinion because you can pair a
fiction and non-fiction book together. My kids like the ones that I have.
Gail Gibbons is wonderful for 2nd grade, but she does not use as many
non-fcition concepts about print as some other authors.
