[MOSAIC] Assessing Comprehension Thinking Strategies

I wanted to enter the conversation briefly to respond to Shari who asked
about combining the oral and written parts of the ACTS instrument. I
actually think that's the best way to truly assess where kids are, but in
the interest of time, I presented it either oral or written assessment with
an emphasis on listening comprehension with Kindergarteners and 1st graders.
If you can combine the assessments in the way you describe, so much the
better!

The other point I wanted to make about ACTS is that the text passages are
only provided for teachers who want to make a very "clean" comparison
between kids' comprehension as measured on these rubrics compared to kids'
comprehension on more formal criterion or norm-referenced assessments.
Whenever possible, I'd like to avoid the passages in favor of more
interesting, dynamic texts, both fiction and non-fiction.

Hope that helps!

very best to all,

ellin keene
