[MOSAIC] second grade homework

Bonita,
I did the same thing as homework for WTW - I probably got this idea from this listserv a few years back. My class had several spelling groups, and so everyone had homework to find words not included on their lists that still fit the pattern they had for the week. So, for instance, they might have to find more er/ur/ir words or whatever. Then the following day the spelling group met for 15 minutes or so and compiled their words on either chart paper or transparency sheets and then shared their words and "spelling rule" with the rest of the class. This forced some metacognitive thinking on their part by having to pre-think how to explain their words and rule. We had some interesting discussions about whether some words they'd collected the night before really fit the rules or not.

I do word hunts as one homework with words their way--students look through their reading material for words that follow the pattern we are studying and make a list of words that could be added to the sort.
