Hi Suzanne,
I'm a special educator working with kids in grade 4. Three years ago my
school began using Everyday Math for grades K & 1 only. Then last year
grades 2-5 began. We were all pretty nervous as well, but now that we're in
year 2, it's actually feeling pretty good! The biggest difference between
EDM and other math curriculums is that you're not teaching to mastery. Each
unit is made up of goals that are beginning, developing or secure. There's a
2 year cycle in which a goal moves from beginning to secure. We had been
using Addison-Wesley with a bit of TERC. I'm pretty happy at this point with
EDM. Will your school provide any professional development to go along with
the new math curriculum? That is really key. Good luck!
