Has anyone read Stephanie Harvey's new book about assessing
comprehension strategies (such as those in MOT and Strategies that
work) - any comments - is it worth buying?

This is my first time posting, so hopefully I'm doing it correctly.
I've done Lit Circles twice this year. Though I don't know everything
going
on in their discussions, they have gone much better this time. I don't
assign roles, but have kept control of when they meet and what their
responses are about. All of my groups meet on the same day. I have
them
summarize what they've read and then discuss their responses. Once they
are
done meeting they have a rubric they fill out for how their group did on
their discussion, then they fill out how they did as an individual. The
last few times I've meet with each group to discuss their meeting and
what
grade they think they deserve for their discussion. They are getting
pretty
good on knowing if they are focused for their discussions. I need to do
some mini-lessons on how to respond to each other.
Most of the responses I've asked them to do have been open enough they
fit
all the books. For one they had two write two thick questions about
their
book, then after sharing their questions and discussing the answers with
their group, they chose a question (there's or someone else's) and wrote
a
paragraph answer. The next time they had to make a connection to the
book
and share it with their group.
The last couple of times they met I've been able to sit back and observe
the
groups (5 or 6 in each class). I would then wander close to groups that
might be a little off task and listen in to what they were discussing.
I've
jotted down notes on what I see to discuss with each group.

Can you explain the rubric you use? Are there two - one rubric for the
group and then another for the individual student?

literacy workshop structures.? The teachers in our building have read
Mosaic, Harvey Daniels, Fountas and Pinnell, and Laura Robb...but we are
still struggling with envisioning what a literacy workshop looks like in
a 6-7 building.?? My principal suggested?I plan a?"workshop"
where?teachers learn about?"workshops."?

Most of those books were aimed mostly at elementary levels. While the
stratgies are fantastic, they can be a bit hard to picture at the middle
school level with the middle school departments and times. I would be
sure
to get a copy of *In the Middle* (Nancie Atwell) and *Seeking Diversity
:
Language Arts With Adolescents* (Linda Rief). Both are older texts and
easy
to get cheaply. I'm sure there are more, but these were the ones that
really helped me get the vision I was looking for.

Yes--Here's an idea. Consider reading to them from small portion of a
science book--have them draw and label parts as you describe: a cell, a
heart chamber, an atom, the wind's movement, etc. Have them compare
pictures and labels and discuss which might be more accurate. Discuss
schema that allows some to "see better" and whether enough description
is given to "see" what the science says. Then let them see pictures in
books and compare their visualization to the pictures and labels given.
Don't forget to let them know that a study of top scientists ( nobel
winners, etc.) revealed that their ability to do the science well
depended on their ability to visualize and draw things beyond the scope
of what the eye could actually see, and then to make predictions from
their visualizations.

I am not in your district or state, but we piloted AIMSweb last year and
are
using it now at all elementary schools and our middle school. We have
also
purchased and use My Reading Coach.........(not so sure about that) we
are
still looking at that information-reading people "think" that it makes a
difference for the very low end readers.......I am not so sure about
that
information because I don't see any carry over to actual classroom
reading performance...there is a disconnect between reading class
instruction and classroom work so little there is little evidence that
that
program is helping.
