I absolutely love Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen for middle school girls.  The book "flips" back and forth between the perspective of the protagonist, a girl, and the boy she is infatuated with since primary school.  This girl has character!  She's bright, big hearted, marches to the beat of her own drummer and sees the shallowness of many of the kids around her, but believes in this boy, until a fateful day.  In addition it is illuminating to middle schoolers of how careful we need to be in forming judgments of others based on appearances.  Great writing, dialogue, characters.  I promise your girls will love it.
