Sorry, I'm not familiar with that novel, but I love teaching issues like  
that with novels.  My one suggestion would be to use picture books to bring  
those issues to the table.  Again, I'm not much help today but my local  public 
library has a book (of which I don't know the name of) that the  librarians can 
look up the topic of picture books in.  I've done this for  topics such as the 
Holocaust and the Underground Railroad.  I'm sure that  you could ask them 
about poverty and gangs etc. and they would be able to  suggest some great books 
that would springboard conversation.  Good  Luck!
