Our Reading Workshop Checklist calls for small group instruction as a
must, but defines three different types of instructional settings.
Guided Reading, Strategic Reading or Lit Club/Book Circle. I like the
flexibility there. Personally, I used strategic grouping far more ofen
that guided reading. An example might be when I was teaching about
nonfiction conventions and wanted to teach children how to use the table
of contents to generate questions and make predictions as a way to
activate schema. I would gather mixed ability groups in need of more
work reading nonfiction well and invite each of them to bring a
just-right nonfiction books with a table of contents. I would
essentially do a targeted mini lesson and then ask children to try it in
the books they brought to the table. I could provide more support in
these small group sessions.
