I know this is off topic, but I signed up for the "To Understand" listserve, but have not received any posts. I did receive a confirmation quite awhile ago, but obviously I'm not on the list. Does anyone know how to get on the list at this point?
I terms of the background knowledge question, if kids understand the purpose of reading is to understand, and the teacher models many texts and many genres using think alouds and lots of student conversation and anchor charts, connections will develop. Perhaps through theme study or author study, text to text connections will be the first aha some students will have to understanding how powerful schema can be to fully enjoying and understand a text.
