I hope this doesn't count as straying too far off the topic of reading comprehension. I just wanted to share the title of a nonfiction book that is written very much in the style of academic essays: Chameleons are Cool by Martin Jenkins. I love it because it is so very much in the style of the essays I'm supposed to get students writing, and it also shows how essays can have a strong sense of voice.
(Hmm. Connect this to reading comprehension. Well-it could also be a great nonfiction read aloud, and you could use it to teach about recognizing nonfiction text structures, and/or transitions. And it's short--so it could fit in the category of "less is more" that people were talking about a few weeks ago.)
If anyone else has good suggestions of short essays to have elementary students read I'd love to hear them. My e-mail is Domina.Natasha at north-haven.k12.ct.us. Thanks!
Natasha
