This might be a book you would want to check on Book club for Middle School by Taffy E. Raphael, Marcella Kehus, Karen Damphousse. The books used for examples are middle school level, but the ideas and ways to set up a Book Club would also work in 3rd through 4th grades. It might be worth checking out, I found many ideas useful.

Shannon,

This book has really helped with how my kids comprehend math. We use EDM, and I love to use the KWC. This was my first year teaching all four subjects. Normally at 5th grade in our school district the students have 2 core teachers divided into Math/Science and LA/SS. It has been awesome to see that most of my day isn't segmented, but meshed through the process of thinking for meaning." I have not tackled all of Ellin's new book, but looking foward to applying it for next year.

Leslie
I came to the same realization this year with my work in lesson study. Text choice is crucial!
What grade do you teach? There are some lists already on the Mosaic tools page at the reading lady website...click under Mosaic resources, then under writing. There are also book lists by strategy...though no list particularly recommended for literature circles and discussion groups.
I would be happy to compile a list of recommendations from members of the listserv if there is interest. I am guessing what we need would be titles, authors and recommended grades and maybe a brief one?sentence?summary. I could then ask Keith to put it on our tools page...
Is there interest?
Jennifer

This year I am realizing that the text that you choose is critical to
generating meaningful discussions in book clubs and mentoring student
writing. I am finding our reading department is lacking books that
would create a rich dialogue or model a strong essay. I think it would
be incredibly helpful if this group would put together a recommended
book list for book clubs, etc. It is impossible to read all of the
books that are published and some of the on-line book lists are just a
list of age or grade level appropriate books. I bought a text on using
mentor texts for writing but I have not found a similarly useful book
for book clubs, at least in the primary grades (third). Any ideas or
suggestions are welcome.
Thanks.
Leslie

Jennifer,
I would be grateful to have a list of books to refer to for book clubs.
This year I have not only done lit circles in my third grade class but I
have hosted a book club before school for very high functioning readers
(fourth grade level and above). It has been difficult choosing texts,
especially when I need them fast. I think it would be of great benefit
to have a list generated from this listserv. I would like to start a
separate listserv for lit circle/book club teachers. I am on my own
where I teach so it is just me and Harvey Daniels.
Leslie
