I am in a K-8 building and every month we ALL read the same book for
what we call "Community Read".
We call this "Book of the Month" in my school. We have used some great
books over the years. This year we used Roxaboxen, Barbara Cooney for September.
The theme was community. We then used one of Patricia Polacco's books for
the Memoir units in October. I have the list somewhere at work. What we did
was use 1 text each month that tied in to either a theme for the month, or
that supported the writing units when possible. The only month we had 2
books, one for K-2 and one for 3 - 5 was February when we did Black History. We
used My Dream of Martin Luther King, Jr for 3 - 5 and an easier read on the
same topic for K-2. Book of the Month is a wonderful way to build school
community and has nothing to do with limiting the read alouds as discussed on this
thread. It is an additional text that is purchased schoolwide by our PTA to
help teachers and children see that we are all connected as a community. We
do one book a month and it is nice to see as you walk around the building.
Teachers continue their reading and writing work using many other texts.
This is one book that is added each month whenever the teacher fits it in. We
have one community bulletin board outside the school office that each class
contributes to around this book.
Next year we were thinking of doing our theme selection of books around s
ocial issues for the year.
