I have my kids read independently while I work with groups and/or conference.  They are responsible to writing me one letter a week (every year I change this because I'm so afraid of killing their love of reading!) and I respond to it.  I may tweak it again this year as I have 25 kids and that's a lot of letters for me to write!  I model my letter after the Fountas and Pinnel first 30 days, too.
