I agree - the Daily Five is a great literacy routine, not only teaching great reading strategies, but also cooperative learning strategies and independent learning strategies. It has worked very well in our 1st-3rd grades. The authors also have a GREAT website.

Have you looked at The Daily 5? It's really just a management system that you can use andÂtweak to meet your needs for reading workshop. If you haven't this might be something to look at. The kids work on reading independently, with partners, word work, writing and listening for lower grades. Even if you don't fully implement it, just some of the language and lessons they use with the kids to get them to really engage, and stay engaged in reading, is worth the $16 you'll spend on the book. If you don't know much about it you can google it and I'm sure you'll come up with a lot.Â

Guided reading groups
I am a pre student teacher in a 2nd grade classroom right now. There are 30 students in that classroom and it is very hard for the teacher to get through reading groups with the students while the others are engaged in something meaningful. Basically, there are five groups and when we are working with each group, she asks the rest of the class to work on their paper for writer♠workshop. I observed that students do not do this. As many times as we tell them to get back to their seats or get to work they heads are always somewhere else. It bothers me to see this and I really need advice on what would be the best way to keep the other students engaged in their work and what should they be working on during that time? Writer♠workshop is not working.
