Travel

the seed plummets toward the ground,
from the security of the mighty tree,
lands on the soil,
sitting,
waiting patiently.
small chutes emerge from the tiny seed,
growing green,
reaching to the sky.
a stiff breeze blows,
snapping a twig from it’s home
falling,
freely floating,
a river accepts the branch,
embracing with cold fingers,
swiftly journeying to the sea.
waves crash,
throwing all that is near,
washing upon the shore.
a small dog barks,
runs,
growling in play.
retrieves a stick found on the beach,
taken away,
thrown to the grass soft and green,
left there forever to decay.

Sunset

Sunrise
Red, yellow, pink, purple
Swirling colors lighting up
the sky.
Clouds illuminated and made brilliant
by the vast array of colors.
Sunrise
Orange, maroon, violet
Banishing the dark blues and blacks
of night.
Sunrise
Causing you to stop
for a moment
and gaze, all thoughts of the hardships in your life
pushed aside.
Sunrise
Skeletal winter trees
Silhouetted
And turned midnight-black
Against the picture-perfect morning scene.
Sunrise
Gradually fading away
to make room
for the bright blues and whites
of day.
Sunrise.
Disappearing.
The beauty giving way to the clouds
And becoming merely
a memory.

Joy

On a normal day
When everything’s going right
You feel one thing:
Joy

Whenever you smile
Or laugh
Or sing
All you know is
Joy.

Whenever things seem hopeless
And the storm clouds hang overhead
The sky will clear eventually
And joy will swoop in like a bird
And save you.

scarborough poem

Scarborough

There are many things to do in Scarborough Maine
But you may only get through a few

Like biking through the Eastern Trail
Maybe even learning how to sail

Go to the beach
Ride a few waves

Go to the football game
though soccer is the best
you could just sit down and rest

Go pick some apples
Eat some there
Bring some home and make a pie

Don’t eat too much or you might die

Its nice to skate on a frozen pond

Go swimming in a pool
Or even go to school

End the night
with an intense game of manhunt

Ode to Tranquility

Ode to Tranquility

By Max Ornstein
Waiting
lying on the soft leaf covered forest floor
Patches of sun weave themselves through the canopy and warm my face
I feel a small tickle of an ant clambering over my shin
Only to fall back to the unforgiving ground
As I stand up my arm grazes a segment of rough oak bark
I look, I see a sprout of grass barely poking up through the dead leaves
A hawk soaring high above my head I can imagine the sights of spring from a birds eye view
The trees, specks of green over a harsh brown background
I can only imagine
As I breath in…
The smell of spring
The smell of:
Wintergreens
Pine trees
Dead leaves
All waft into my nose
I can only imagine

How to Be a Fairy Shrimp

Be tinier than everyone,
Bear large antennae,
Have a head, thorax and abdomen.

Live in vernal pools and potholes,
Maybe other ephemeral pools.

Lay many eggs,
And leave them there to sit.

Live months or years in your egg,
Die very soon after you are hatched.

Have three eyes upon your head
And another section with your jaws
And still have people say your beautiful.

Great oak

The Great Big Oak

As I climb up the metal ladder that is tied to the great oak
I think……
I think about the number of times I have done this before

What lies above is our greatest prize
The best hangout spot in our lives
I step on to the makeshift floor

It creaks and moans as the wind pushes,
acorns fall

I climb up a second ladder
I clamber on to the second floor
I look down

Thirty feet above the ground
I think……
what a great tree fort

Winnie’s Visions

Winnie had often been haunted

by visions of

what it would be like

to be kidnapped

But none of her visions

had been like this,

with her kidnappers

as alarmed as

she was herself

Would You Know Me?

Would you know me?
If we were to pass on the way to a friend’s house
or stumble upon each other
at the summer fest?
Would you know me?

Would you know at just a glance?
that I love running and manhunt
and I enjoy time with my brothers
and I am fond of time with friends

Would you know from another perspective?
that I despise it when people backstab
and I cannot bear it when people don’t trust
and I hate it when friends betray each other,

Would you know that I am a,
Son,
Brother,
Runner,
Climber

Would you know me?
